Bring a splash of electrifying color to your reef with the Captive-Bred Orchid Dottyback. Strikingly beautiful, this species is renowned for its vibrant, solid magenta-purple coloration and the distinct dark stripe running across its eyes. Endemic to the Red Sea, the Orchid Dottyback is a favorite among marine aquarists for its active, darting swimming behavior and curious personality.

Choosing a captive-bred specimen offers significant advantages for your home aquarium. Captive-bred Dottybacks are generally hardier, more disease-resistant, and significantly more accustomed to aquarium life than their wild-caught counterparts . They easily transition to prepared foods and tend to display a slightly milder temperament, making them an excellent choice for both novice and experienced reef keepers.

As a functional addition to your tank, the Orchid Dottyback is a natural predator of nuisance pests. They are well-known for hunting and consuming small bristleworms, helping to keep your tank’s pest population in check naturally .

Orchid Dottyback Care Guide

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming room and territory for a single Orchid Dottyback . They are rock-dwellers by nature, so your aquascape should feature plenty of live rock with abundant caves, crevices, and hiding spots. This complex rockwork helps them feel secure, which actually encourages them to spend more time out in the open. A tight-fitting lid is also highly recommended, as they can be prone to jumping when startled.

Water Parameters

Maintaining stable water conditions will ensure your Dottyback thrives and displays its best coloration.

  • Temperature: 75°F to 80°F (23°C to 27°C)
  • Specific Gravity / Salinity: 1.020 to 1.025
  • pH: 8.1 to 8.4

Diet and Feeding

The Orchid Dottyback is a carnivore that requires a varied, high-protein diet to maintain its vibrant purple hue. Because this fish is captive-bred, it is already habituated to standard aquarium foods. You should feed them a mix of meaty frozen foods, such as mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and krill . They will also readily accept high-quality carnivore pellets and flake foods . Feed them small portions 1 to 2 times daily.

Temperament and Tankmates

While considered semi-aggressive, the captive-bred Orchid Dottyback is generally one of the most peaceful members of the Dottyback family. They will fiercely defend their chosen cave or crevice but usually leave other fish alone provided the tank is large enough. Ideal tankmates include moderately assertive fish like clownfish, larger gobies, tangs, and dwarf angelfish. Avoid housing them with very timid, slow-moving fish (like firefish) or other Dottybacks, unless introducing a confirmed mated pair.

Reef Compatibility

The Orchid Dottyback is completely reef-safe and will not nip at your corals. They are also safe with most clean-up crew invertebrates like snails and hermit crabs. However, exercise caution if keeping them with very small, delicate ornamental shrimp (like sexy shrimp), as the Dottyback’s predatory nature might lead them to view tiny crustaceans as a snack.
