General Soft Coral Care Facts

Soft corals are an excellent starting point because they are generally more tolerant than other coral types. Here are some basic guidelines for success:

• Lighting: Most soft corals thrive in low to moderate lighting. There’s no need for expensive, high-intensity lights, making them very adaptable.
• Water Flow: Gentle water movement is key. They prefer low to moderate water flow, just enough to keep them clean of detritus without blasting them.
• Placement: Place your new frags in the lower to middle sections of your aquarium. Give them plenty of space, as they will grow and spread over time.
• Feeding: While many soft corals get their energy from photosynthesis, they appreciate occasional supplemental feedings of liquid coral food or phytoplankton to encourage faster growth and more vibrant coloration.
• Water Parameters: The most important thing is stability. Aim for a temperature of 75-80°F, salinity of 1.024-1.026, and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
