Category:

The Captive-Bred Mocha Clownfish is a rich, chocolate-toned designer variant of the classic Ocellaris Clownfish. Bred for its deeper brown coloration (often with warm orange highlights in the face and fins), the Mocha is a standout choice if you want the familiar clownfish personality with a more dramatic, modern look. Because it’s captive-bred, it typically arrives hardier, already adjusted to aquarium foods, and better suited to life in home reef systems than wild-caught fish. Many “Mocha” lines originate from selective breeding and crosses of Ocellaris color morphs (commonly involving black-and-white Ocellaris lines), producing the signature mocha coloration .

Mocha Clownfish have the classic clownfish behaviors people love: they’re active, personable, and often choose a favorite corner or host to “claim” as their home base. In reef tanks, they’re generally considered a safe, dependable fish that fits a wide range of stocking plans.

Quick Stats

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive (typical of Ocellaris, especially as they mature and claim territory)
  • Reef Safe: Yes (won’t nip corals)
  • Adult Size: Typically around the standard Ocellaris adult size (about 3 inches in most care references)
  • Diet: Omnivore (readily accepts prepared foods)
  • Minimum Tank Size: Commonly recommended 20 gallons or larger for Ocellaris-type clownfish

Mocha Clownfish Care Guide

Tank Size & Setup

A 20-gallon or larger aquarium is a widely recommended minimum for Ocellaris designer clownfish, including Mocha-type variants . Provide stable filtration, consistent salinity, and a rockscape with caves/ledges so the fish can retreat when stressed. Clownfish don’t require an anemone to thrive, but they appreciate a “home” area (some will host in soft corals or large-polyp corals instead).

If you plan to keep a pair, a 20–30 gallon tank can work well depending on aquascape and tankmates, with larger systems giving you more flexibility and fewer territorial issues.

Water Parameters

Mocha Clownfish do best in standard reef conditions with stability as the priority:

  • Temperature: typically kept around 75–80
  • Salinity: stable marine range (commonly around 1.025 SG in reef tanks)
  • pH: typical reef range (around 8.1–$8.4)

Avoid rapid swings (especially salinity and temperature), as clownfish tolerate “imperfect” numbers better than they tolerate instability.

Diet & Feeding

Mocha Clownfish are enthusiastic eaters and usually accept prepared foods quickly. Feed a varied omnivore diet:

  • High-quality pellets or flakes as a staple
  • Frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood for variety

Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily. Consistent, moderate feeding helps maintain body condition and coloration without driving nutrient issues.

Temperament & Compatibility

Like most Ocellaris-derived clowns, Mocha Clownfish are generally community-friendly but can become territorial around their chosen “host” area—especially once a pair forms. They pair well with many reef fish, but avoid combining them with very aggressive species in smaller tanks.

Also avoid mixing multiple clownfish types in small to mid-size tanks unless you have a large system and a clear plan; clownfish-to-clownfish aggression is one of the most common compatibility problems.

Reef & Anemone Hosting

Mocha Clownfish are reef safe and suitable for coral tanks. They may form a symbiotic relationship with compatible host anemones in appropriate, mature systems (and may also “host” in certain corals or tank décor).
