Meet the architect of your sand bed. The Engineer Goby earns its name through fascinating behavior—constantly rearranging sand, moving small rocks, and reshaping its environment with impressive determination. This small but industrious goby displays subtle tan and brown coloration with darker markings, allowing it to blend seamlessly while it works. Beyond its entertaining engineering habits, it’s an excellent sand sifter that helps keep your substrate clean, aerated, and free of detritus while adding peaceful, captivating activity to your reef. This is a WYSIWYG fish – What You See Is What You Get. The goby shown in the photos is the exact specimen you will receive from MyTinyFins, carefully acclimated and ready to transform your sand bed.

Care Guide

Tank Size: Engineer Gobies thrive in 20-gallon tanks or larger, though larger systems give them more room to showcase their engineering behavior. They’re small (2–3 inches) but need adequate sand bed space to sift, burrow, and rearrange. Temperament: Peaceful, reef-safe, and non-aggressive toward most fish and corals. Generally solitary, though they can sometimes be kept in pairs if the tank is large enough. Compatible with community reef setups and compatible with other peaceful species. Feeding: Natural sand sifters that spend hours digging and moving substrate in search of small crustaceans, copepods, and amphipods. Supplement with high-quality micro pellets, flake food, or frozen mysis shrimp 2–3 times per week for optimal nutrition and energy. Lighting & Flow: No special lighting requirements—standard reef lighting works perfectly. Prefer gentle to moderate flow. They’ll sift and engineer even in calm conditions, but moderate flow helps them thrive and brings food their way. Substrate: Live sand is essential. They need a deep sand bed (3–4+ inches) with an active population of copepods, amphipods, and other microfauna. A thriving pod population keeps them naturally fed and encourages constant activity. Rockwork: While they don’t require extensive rock structures, providing some small rocks and pebbles gives them material to move and engineer, keeping them mentally stimulated and active. Water Parameters: Maintain stable salinity (1.025–1.026), pH (8.1–8.4), and temperature (72–78°F). They’re hardy and adaptable but prefer consistent, clean water conditions. Tank Mates: Compatible with peaceful fish species and most non-aggressive reef inhabitants. Safe with corals. Avoid keeping with aggressive fish or large predators. Their small size makes them potential prey for larger fish. Behavior: Engineer Gobies are most active during lower-light periods and feeding times. Expect constant sand movement, rock rearrangement, and burrowing behavior. This activity helps aerate your substrate naturally and creates an ever-changing landscape in your tank. Note: Their sand-moving behavior may occasionally displace small corals or decorations—this is normal and part of their charm.
